Vision Processing Speed as a Cognitive Biomarker
Vision Processing Speed (VPS) measures how quickly the brain processes visual information. Research has established VPS as a sensitive, non-invasive biomarker for early cognitive decline — detectable years before clinical symptoms emerge. VMdetect uses a validated VPS screening protocol to establish a baseline and flag meaningful change over time.
Neuroplasticity & Cognitive Training
The brain retains the capacity to form new neural connections throughout life. Targeted cognitive training exercises can strengthen the neural pathways associated with processing speed, attention, and executive function. VMaerobics applies this principle through structured, progressive visual training sessions designed to produce measurable, lasting improvements.
3D Visual Stimulation

The ACTIVE Study
The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study is the largest randomized controlled trial of cognitive training in older adults ever conducted.
Study Design
Randomized controlled trial across six U.S. research sites. Participants aged 65–94 were randomized to one of three cognitive training interventions — memory, reasoning, or speed of processing — or a no-contact control group.
Speed of Processing Training
The speed of processing intervention, which most closely aligns with the AfE methodology, produced the largest and most durable effects. Participants showed significant improvements in processing speed, useful field of view, and instrumental activities of daily living.
10-Year Follow-Up
A 10-year follow-up published in JAMA Internal Medicine (2014) found that participants who received speed of processing training had a 29% lower risk of dementia compared to the control group — a finding with direct relevance to the VMaerobics intervention model.
Sustained Benefits
Cognitive benefits from speed of processing training were sustained 7 to 14 years after the initial intervention, with booster sessions further extending the effect. This durability distinguishes VPS training from other cognitive interventions.
